The National Trust have undertaken a huge task at Lanhydrock this year. The 400+ year old ceiling in the long gallery has been repaired and cleaned over a period of several months. During this time, the public have been allowed access to see the progress of this work using metal platforms that have been installed along the gallery.
It has offered the opportunity to see the detailed panels up close, a real one off experience. Previously, the gallery could only be seen from the one end of the room, the room itself was not open for the public to walk around. All the furnishings and contents have been safely removed into other nearby rooms, so this has also enabled people to see these items from a closer proximity.
At the time I visited, the work has almost been completed. The house will close for the season on November 3rd, and then the platforms will be removed and the furniture, paintings and other contents will be returned to the Long Gallery.
I understand from speaking to one of the guides that the BBC have been to film the project, and this will form part of the next series of The Hidden Treasures of The National Trust. It should be a very interesting watch.
For more details on visiting the property, opening times and directions, etc. please check out the National Trust section on Lanhydrock.
I posted a blog about an earlier visit to Lanhydrock in 2022. You can find that post here.
