Lunch in Port Isaac

Posted on 31st August, 2022

It's still peak holiday season this week, so I wouldn't normally venture to the tourist hotspots like Port Isaac, but I was invited to meet up with my friend from Looe and a mutual friend who was here on holiday.

The car parks were busy, with the nearest one being full, so we had a 15 minute walk downhill to the village centre. It's quite a climb back up, so you need to allow a little extra time for the return trip. The village was looking beautiful in the August sunshine, the bright blue sky certainly shows the white painted buildings at their best.

Port Isaac has become very popular since ITV started filming Doc Martin in the village. The house used as the surgery is currently up for sale at £1.15 million. Lovely view, but the new owner will have to put up with tourists standing outside the front door taking selfies for much of the time. If you follow the series then many of the village buildings will be very familiar.

Of course, Doc Martin is not the only claim to fame. The village is also home to the Fishermens' Friends who started singing sea shanties on The Platt to raise funds for charity before signing a record deal and going off on tour. A sequel to the film about their story has just been released, and there is also a musical drawing audiences to theatres, including our own Hall For Cornwall.

Lunch was had at the Old School Hotel and Restaurant on our way back up to the car park. I can recommend the smoked salmon and horseradish mayo sandwich.

On leaving Port Isaac, we drove towards Delabole to check out the new Sea View Farm Shop. It has amazing views over the bay, and a huge glass window to take advantage of them in the cafe area. There is plenty of seating outside too, with lots of room for chidren to run around. They have an outdoor covered stage setup for music evenings, a rum shack bar and barbecue, and I believe that their outdoor events have been rather popular this summer with the wonderful weather that we've had. I can understand why. We settled for a cup of tea, but the cakes on offer looked very tempting., and there was some nice local produce for sale in the shop too.

All in all, a lovely day, and I'm glad that I remembered to take the sun cream with me!

If you want to check out the views for yourself, then go to Sea View Farm Shop for menu and directions. I can't think of a much better place to stop for a cooked breakfast and take in the amazing view. Open until 8pm too.
