Castle Drogo

Posted on 2nd July, 2022

Yesterday, I ventured over the border into Devon to visit Castle Drogo. The castle has undergone extensive renovations over the last 8 years, and has now finally reopened to the public.

The castle is the most recently built in England, work having been completed in 1930. The interiors are furnished in the style of that era, and it was fascinating to see items that I remember from my grandparents' homes. My favourite room was the drawing room - spacious yet comfortable, with commanding views over the Teign Valley towards Dartmoor. The servants' areas are always interesting to look around, and I loved the little workroom where the maid would have sat repairing linens and altering clothes on the Singer sewing machine.

The gardens were also looking wonderful. The rose garden and borders are full of colour, and the scented garden smelt amazing. There are lots of benches to sit and enjoy the colours, scents and glimpses of the moor.

The shop is full of the usual gifts and books, and I found a lovely Physostegia plant that will go in the back of my own garden border at home.

Castle Drogo has been owned by the National Trust since 1974. It is situated on the northern edge of Dartmoor, just off the A30 about 16 miles west of Exeter. For more information, please check out the website page at https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castle-drogo.
