Christmas at Eden

Posted on 15th December, 2023

One of my favourite traditions at this time of year is the Christmas at Eden event. The outdoor arena is turned into an ice rink, and the biomes are given a magical makeover with creative lighting and music.

Each biome is lit differently. The tropical biome has individually lit palms, and additional light sources that pulse with the background music. Mist is sprayed across ponds, the droplets catching the light beams as they change from red to blue to green and the purple. The music is instrumental, interspersed with quotes about the natural world by David Attenborough and sounds of the jungle. It is quite dark walking around the biome, but this just adds to the atmosphere and heightens the senses.

The mediterranean biome is very different. It is bright, with much more of the planting and features highlighted with coloured light beams, and there are strips of twinkly lights coming from on high down to ground level. There is no background music as such, but a live band playing at hourly intervals from 5.30. This evening, it was a jazz band. There is also a mediterranean drinks bar as you enter the biome selling festive drinks and allowing people to sit and soak up the music and the atmosphere.

There was a noticeable relaxed and calm atmosphere at Eden today. Away from the busy world of shopping, partying and general Christmas rush, everyone was slowly walking around, admiring the lights and enjoying the music. What better way to enjoy the run up to Christmas?

For more information on dates and times and for booking a visit, please see Eden Project

If you live local to Cornwall and Devon, you may be eligible for a Local's Pass. This is a great value pass enabling you to visit Eden as often as you wish for the time limit on the pass. Currently a Winter pass is available to purchase which is valid until March 31st 2024, or you can apply for an annual pass.
