I do love a mystery trip with my local Bude WI. Today we set off on the hottest day of the year in a lovely air conditioned coach, and finally arrived at Lynton on the North Devon coast. We had 3 hours to enjoy a wander around Lynton and a 2 way ticket for the funicular cliff railway enabling us to travel down to its twin town of Lynmouth at the bottom of the cliff.
After a brief walk, we managed to find a bench in the shade of a large tree to have a drink and a scone. The weather clouded over and the breeze off the sea made it feel quite comfortable. Eventually, we strolled to the beach where you can see the coastline of South Wales across the Bristol Channel. We couldn't pass the Kellys ice cream kiosk without having a traditional seaside treat, a single scoop of white chocolate and raspberry for me which was delicious. The time passed quickly, and after a wander through the gift shops and cafes, we returned to Lynton on the cliff railway and got back on the awaiting coach.
No WI mystery trip is complete without a proper afternoon tea on the way home hosted by a fellow WI. Today, Clovelly WI did us proud with a lovely selection of sandwiches, meringues, quiche, cakes, scones and a plentiful supply of cups of tea.
We arrived home to learn that Bude had broken the record for the highest ever temperature recorded in Cornwall at 36C.
The cliff railway is the highest and steepest water powered railway in the world. It has been in operation since 1890. For more information, please go to https://www.cliffrailwaylynton.co.uk/
