The Japanese Garden

Posted on 6th July, 2024

What a gem this little garden is. Set in just 1 acre in the village of St. Mawgan, it is a lovely place to walk, sit and relax. It is intended to be a place of contemplation and meditation, and certainly provides this.

Little gravel pathways wind between the acers and plants, crossing the bridge and koi pond, leading onto a decking area with seating and the tea house. There is also a zen garden, moss garden and a bamboo grove. There is seating all around the garden where you can sit and enjoy the peace and quiet, the trickle of a waterfall or the ringing sound of a wind chime hanging from the tea house. Amazingly, in spite of being very close to Newquay airport, you don't really notice the sounds from air traffic as it is well buffered by the canopy of trees.

Japanese ornaments in the form of pagodas, temples, frogs, etc are placed around the garden area, and you can purchase similar items in the shop. They also stock an amazing array of bonsai from starter trees to larger structures. There are other plants for sale too, and I purchased a very young acer to plant out in my own garden.

The garden is mostly flat, and the gravel paths make it very accessible for wheelchairs. Dogs are not permitted, apart from Guide dogs.

There are no toilets or cafe at the gardens, but these facilities can be found in the village of St. Mawgan just a few yards down the road.

For more details and directions, please visit The Japanese Garden. In 2024, the garden is open from 10am till 6pm every day from 1st March until the 15th November, although they do close earlier in October after the clocks go back.
